Starr offers excellent medical plan options, but no plan covers all potential costs of a serious illness or injury. If a major health event occurs, deductibles and coinsurance can add up to thousands of dollars. We offer three voluntary benefits plans that may greatly reduce your financial exposure.

Overview

Starr offers three voluntary benefits plans: Critical Illness, Accident and Hospital Indemnity Insurance. These plans pay a benefit directly to you, helping to bring you peace of mind and potentially ease the financial burden that an accident, illness, or hospital stay can have on your family.

You must enroll to initially participate. After that, your current elections will roll forward into next year. Employee contributions will be deducted on a post-tax basis. As a result, any benefits received under the Voluntary Benefits plan will not be subject to income tax.

Critical Illness Insurance

Critical Illness Insurance reduces the financial impact of a major illness, such as a heart attack, stroke or cancer, and pays a lump-sum benefit directly to you once you or a covered family member is diagnosed with a covered condition.

Examples of Covered Illnesses:

  • Heart attack
  • Major organ transplant
  • End stage renal (kidney) failure
  • Cancer
  • Stroke
  • Benign brain tumors
  • Childhood conditions

Plan Features:

  • You do not have to be terminally ill to receive benefits.
  • You can elect to cover yourself, your spouse and your children.
  • Coverage is portable — you can take your policy with you if you change jobs or retire.

Note: The policy or its provisions may vary or be unavailable in some states. The policy has exclusions and limitations. Rates are subject to mid-year increases at five-year age bands.

Accident Insurance

Accidents happen. You can’t always prevent them, but you can take steps to reduce their financial impact, which can be substantial. Accident Insurance can help cover the out-of-pocket medical expenses and extra bills that can follow an accident.

The total benefit you receive is based on the type of injury, its severity and the medical services you received in treatment and recovery. The plan pays benefits for a variety of injuries and accident-related expenses. Family coverage options are also available.

Examples of Covered Injuries and Services:

  • Fractures
  • Dislocations
  • Hospitalization
  • Physical therapy including respiratory and speech therapy
  • Emergency room treatment
  • Transportation

Plan Features:

  • Benefits are paid for accidents that occur on and off the job.
  • You can elect to cover yourself, your spouse and your children.
  • Coverage is portable — you can take your policy with you if you change jobs or retire.

Note: The policy or its provisions may vary or be unavailable in some states. The policy has exclusions and limitations.

Hospital Indemnity Insurance

Even with medical insurance, a hospital stay can cost you thousands of dollars in deductibles and coinsurance. Hospital Indemnity Insurance pays a benefit directly to you if you or a covered family member receives inpatient hospital care. You receive a benefit for being admitted to the hospital and for each day you are in the hospital.

Plan Features:

  • Benefits are paid regardless of any other insurance you have.
  • No physical exams are required to enroll for coverage.
  • Premiums are paid through convenient payroll deductions.
  • You can elect to cover yourself, your spouse and your children.
  • Coverage is portable — you can take your policy with you if you change jobs or retire.
  • Inpatient hospitalization and rehab for mental illness and substance misuse and newborn nursery coverage.

Note: The policy or its provisions may vary or be unavailable in some states. The policy has exclusions and limitations.

Keep in mind

Voluntary benefits plans only add to coverage provided by your primary medical plan. They don’t cover your day-to-day health care needs.

How much does voluntary benefits coverage cost?

Voluntary benefits coverage is relatively inexpensive. These plans often work well in combination with a high-deductible health plan, giving you some added peace of mind at a low cost. The amount you pay will depend on which plan(s) you choose and whether you cover just yourself or family members, too. In addition, critical illness insurance rates vary by age, tobacco use, and the benefit level you select.

You pay the full cost of coverage through after-tax paycheck deductions. To see your premiums and enroll, log in to the Workday website.
